What’s the difference between decimal and binary units?

Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) count in powers of 1000, the convention used for storage marketing and network speeds. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) count in powers of 1024, which is how operating systems actually address memory — that’s why a drive labelled “1 TB” shows as less than 1 TiB in your file manager.
