Both documents are rendered page by page at the same scale, then compared pixel by pixel. Tiny anti-aliasing noise is ignored; real visual changes are painted magenta on a faded copy of the page. Extra pages in either file are flagged as “only in A” or “only in B”.
The appearance. That catches moved images, layout shifts and font changes that text-based diffs miss — but a change invisible to the eye (like reflowed identical text) won’t be flagged.
