How strong is the protection?

AES-256 — the strongest encryption the PDF standard supports, applied by qpdf running as WebAssembly in your browser. The file and password never leave your device.

What if I forget the password?

The file cannot be opened by anyone — including you and including us. There is no backdoor and no recovery, so store the password somewhere safe.

What’s an owner password?

The password used to change the document’s security settings later. If you don’t set one, the document password fills both roles.
